We had a very low-key birthday party for her at her ballet studio. I love parties where all you have to do is get the cake and bring along your cute kid, and they do the rest. A dozen little girls tumbled, they danced, they did a craft, sang happy birthday to Ella, and ate ice cream cake. We opened the presents at home, because we try to have birthday parties not be about the presents, but about giving guests a good time.

Then we went to Chili's for dinner, where a half-dozen teenage waiters and waitresses sang and clapped "Happy Happy Birthday" to my lovely little girl.

But I think this was my favorite photo of all. The Snuggle With Daddy After Opening Presents photo.
