Explained sex and birth control to the girls over lunch today, in response to Ella's question about whether you can prevent a pregnancy from occurring. Kicked in menstruation, too, as part of the explanation of how different birth control medicines work. Why would anyone want to have sex if they didn't want to make a baby? they asked. It feels good, I said.
"But not for kids," said Madison.
"Right."
"For kids it would hurt."
"Yes. You have to grow a lot for things to be the right shape and size."
Their reaction was engaged interest in the facts. Certainly nothing like Madison's initial response when she asked how the sperm got to the egg (when she was five, I think), which was "EEEEEEEW." This discussion was infinitely more satisfying than that one, at least for the parent.
